About Distance Education

Education in the distance mode has always been popular for those desirous of enhancing their knowledge while pursuing their career.

In the current economic scenario where students are keen on opting for a job as soon as they graduate, the scope for distance education is unlimited. Once in service it becomes increasingly difficult to take a sabbatical to pursue higher education. Without enhanced qualification growth becomes retarded. It is at this juncture that Distance Education plays a crucial role by removing the impediment in the path of higher positions and better placements. Therefore Distance Education is the “mantra” that will liberate both corporate India and the ambitious Indian. The demand for distance education shall only increase exponentially with passage of time.

Technological advancement has and will play a major role in distance education.Face-to-face sessions can be taken online, while recorded sessions of the faculties can be aired on a stipulated day and time giving a huge advantage to the student. All material, questions, projects can be viewed, completed and submitted online

According to the Higher Education in India report by Ernst & Young, around 4.2 million students were enrolled in distance learning programmes in 2011-2012 compared to only 1.38 million students in 2000-01. Student enrollment in distance education has grown at an annual rate of 11 per cent in the last three decades (1981-2012). Even the number of distance education institutes has grown at a healthy pace in India. During the last three decades (1981-2012), number of distance education institutes has grown at an annual rate of 7.6 per cent.

In a country like India where the respect of an individual comes from the number of degrees he/she/has attained and the knowledge that person has gained, why should one restrict oneself due to financial constraints (distance education can be done at reasonable prices as compared to full time programme’s) or household constraints in case of women who may have to tend to household chores . Whatever the constraints, Distance Education is the only solution to academic progress while staying focussed on ones current assignment.

This is the fundamental intent of St. Michael’s Institute of Leadership Education(SMILE) for entering into an MOU with Madurai Kamaraj University, Directorate of Distance Education as its Examination-cum-Study Centre, in a big way, in Kolkata at its own premises.

The Directorate of Distance Education of Madurai Kamaraj University which caters to the needs of more than 1.5 lakh students , was established in 1971 and have since been running the show with highest esteem and credibility. The degrees awarded by the Directorate of Distance Learning, Madurai Kamaraj University is recognised by all Central Government and State Government organisations for recruitment.
